From ff73f48f42c313499e7c34e6c7a33c5466bb7a6c Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Matteo Martelli Date: Sun, 6 Sep 2026 15:38:38 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] nixos/doc: add note recommending extra setup before formatting Add a note in the formatting section of the manual installation guide to warn users that the extra setups like LVM, encryption and RAID need be done before formatting. This to avoid the users ending up doing the extra setup after the initial setup, at which point they would need to start back since these operations erase the partition data. Also add a reference to the already existing LUKS section. --- .../manual/installation/installing.chapter.md | 19 ++++++++++++++----- 1 file changed, 14 insertions(+), 5 deletions(-) diff --git a/nixos/doc/manual/installation/installing.chapter.md b/nixos/doc/manual/installation/installing.chapter.md index c3134b2d5229..a9f0b4d69009 100644 --- a/nixos/doc/manual/installation/installing.chapter.md +++ b/nixos/doc/manual/installation/installing.chapter.md @@ -285,6 +285,20 @@ Once complete, you can follow with #### Formatting {#sec-installation-manual-partitioning-formatting} []{#sec-installation-partitioning-formatting} + +::: {.note} +If you want to create LVM volumes, encrypted filesystem, or RAID devices, +do it now before formatting. + +- For creating LVM volumes, the LVM commands, e.g., `pvcreate`, + `vgcreate`, and `lvcreate`. + +- For creating an encrypted filesystem for your *root* partition see + [LUKS encryption](#sec-luks-file-systems). + +- For creating software RAID devices, use `mdadm`. +::: + Use the following commands: - For creating an ext4 partition: @@ -323,11 +337,6 @@ Use the following commands: The `-F 32` flag selects the FAT32 filesystem and `-n` assigns the "boot" label to the partition. -- For creating LVM volumes, the LVM commands, e.g., `pvcreate`, - `vgcreate`, and `lvcreate`. - -- For creating software RAID devices, use `mdadm`. - ### Installing {#sec-installation-manual-installing} []{#sec-installation-installing}
